Barisof Designs is a collaboration in designing, forming, glazing and firing. Our focus is on creating functional objects, carefully balancing form and design.
Clay is what brought us together in Santa Cruz almost 50 years ago. Both of us became captivated with working in clay during our college years. We each had very different directions
in our academic studies, but were pulled in the direction of making pots.
Watching a pot being thrown on the wheel is still “magical.” Seeing a pot made thousands of years ago is astounding. Pottery transcends time and provides a
vital link to the past. Being potters places us in this continuum, which allows for limitless possibilities.
Travelling around the world from England to Japan in the early 1970s, Steven continued learning/working in clay. He was fortunate to spend time with
internationally known potters Michael Cardew in Cornwall, England and Hamada Shoji in Mashiko, Japan. Upon his return, he moved to Santa Cruz to start a pottery business,
which offered classes and studio space for rent.
In 1985, we traveled for seven months throughout Asia and Europe interviewing potters, sharing thoughts and feelings on what it means to be a potter in society
today. This common bond of clay provided a focus and many wonderful experiences.
Having visited Bizen, Shigaraki and Arita in 1985, subsequent trips to Japan in 2010 and 2017 gave us the opportunity to visit Hagi and the ancient kiln sites in
Echizen and Seto. The Japanese aesthetic resonates with us and has influenced our pottery designs and glazes.
Being potters keeps us humble as we are always learning and growing with our craft. We always say that the kiln has the last word, not us.
We sell our pottery directly from our studio and are available year-round. We test and develop our glazes, which are non-toxic and safe for food. Connecting
with our customers, many of whom we have known for decades, brings purpose and meaning to our work. |
